Ma. Cecilia Esteban Gallaga, 55, joined our Heavenly Creator last June 16, 2010 after a decade-long battle with cancer.

China, as she is often called, was born on February 9, 1955, in Manila.

China graduated with a degree in Liberal Arts major in Secretarial Science from St. Scholastica’s College Manila in 1975. In 2004, she completed her Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of St. La Salle.

She assumed a new position this June as the Vice Chancellor for Mission and Development of the University of St. La Salle. In 2007, she was appointed director of the Center for Institutional Development. As director, she passionately helped build the One La Salle Scholarship Endowment Fund through Hating Kapatid and other creative fund-raising endeavors. In the year 2000, she was the director of the USLS Bookstore and at the same time the Vice-President of Negros Island, Inc., ANP Showroom.

She was filled with 34 years of teaching experience. She started in 1975 as part-time teacher at St. Scholastica’s College. She began teaching at the University of St. La Salle in 1999 as part-time professor of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies and as a professor of the Graduate School in 2009.

China was an active member of the Bukas Loob Sa Dios Covenant Community Bacolod Chapter since 1992. She served in the District Council of Stewards, a prayer leader, as well as sharer in spirit seminars and marriage encounters.

Known for her dynamism, positive spirit, unwavering Christian faith, dedicated service and Lasallian charism, China is survived by her loving husband Dr. Ricardo Gallaga and children, Trisa and Ian.

Her body lies in state at the Montelibano Chapel, University of St. La Salle.
